Care City Weekly—Monthly Highlights
An easy-to-scan monthly roundup of some of our favourite insights, articles, and stories.
Welcome to a new Month.
April was a fantastic month. We focused more on other aspects of our publication, so if you observed, we didn't publish as much as we did in previous months.
We started exploring video content, and one of our first in April showed us that readers enjoy and appreciate short-form video content.
So, going forward, we will be publishing more video content.
You can find us on social media or our YouTube channel.
This month's focus is going to be on Healthcare entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship is an important aspect of our editorial focus. We believe there are many opportunities in the healthcare ecosystem that healthcare professionals, leaders, and innovators can take advantage of to build products and services that can improve healthcare and create opportunities.
We're also glad to inform you that our Healthcare Leadership & Innovation webinar will be held this month. You can watch the March edition here.
This edition will follow our month's focus. We have an expert in healthcare entrepreneurship in Africa who will share his wealth of experience in building healthcare solutions in the African context.
We're exploring a different approach to publishing our webinar discussions. Instead of focusing on live webinars, we want to explore recording discussions, editing them, and making them available across our social channels.
We may still have live participants, but they will be very few. If you want to join the live participants, you can always register. To be in the loop, subscribe for free.
NOTE: We moved our Substack newsletter. If you're on the old Substack Publication, you will not get new updates.

Balancing Profit And Purpose In Healthcare Startups
"In recent years, Africa has seen a powerful wave of healthcare innovation. Young founders across cities like Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, and Kigali are using technology to improve healthcare practice and delivery. However, as this innovative movement grows, a critical question remains: Can healthcare startups generate revenue while still making a meaningful impact? Let's explore this thought."
Five Dreadful Ideas Health Tech Innovators Must Avoid At All Costs!
"In the world of innovation, there are attractive ideas that innovators, investors, leaders, and entrepreneurs must avoid. And it's not because these ideas are bad. In fact, most of them are excellent and exciting ideas that have a lot of problem-solving potential. The problem usually boils down to factors like execution, strategy, and, most importantly, what I call seasons. While many exciting, innovative ideas exist in the health tech ecosystem, successful implementation requires patience, strategic planning, and a keen understanding of timing."
Month Highlights
The Early Parenthood Puzzle: How Babylogger Fits The Pieces Together
"Parenthood can be challenging, especially for new working-class parents venturing into this experience without prior knowledge, experience, or support. While numerous parenting applications claim to simplify the early parenting journey, many, unfortunately, contribute to the stress with poor user experiences and interfaces. Innovation is not just about creating new things; it often involves examining and improving existing solutions. We can create something better by drawing on our experiences and considering user feedback. The founders of Babylogger realised that baby monitoring applications could be enhanced to make life easier for parents, particularly new ones who are balancing work and other commitments."
What You Need To Know About Psychedelics
"Psychedelics are substances that can alter the way the brain works. While that might sound negative, some people believe that they could be helpful for those feeling sad or anxious. Albert Hofmann, the inventor of LSD, a type of Psychedelic, described his experience: "It gave me an inner joy, an open-mindedness, a gratefulness, open eyes, and an internal sensitivity for the miracles of creation…" Classic psychedelics generally cause specific psychological, visual, and auditory changes and oftentimes a substantially altered state of consciousness, which is temporary. Despite the legal barriers to its possession, it is still commonly used for various purposes. A 2022 survey by YouGov found that 28% of Americans had used a psychedelic at some point in their life. Researchers are examining them to determine if they can help people feel better."
Is Cannabis Truly Harmless Just Because It's Natural? New Research Suggests Otherwise
"With growing legalisation and normalisation, cannabis often gets a free pass in public discussions. It's natural, widely used, and socially accepted in many parts of the world. But new findings from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus are challenging that relaxed narrative—especially when it comes to the impact of cannabis on the brain. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open has shown that heavy lifetime cannabis use is linked to reduced brain activity, particularly in areas that control working memory, decision-making, and emotional processing."
Building Integrity
"Lack of integrity is like a hidden virus in the software of leaders. It gradually and slowly corrupts. You may not know it, and you may think that you're getting away with cutting corners and compromising until a day comes when the rottenness is exposed. By that time, you can't do anything about it again. The first step in building integrity as leaders is to understand the importance of leadership."
